The legislation passed the House of Representatives with a 249 to 175 vote. 231 Democrats voted in favor of the legislation with 17 voting against. 18 Republicans voted for the legislation with 158 voting against. “Stonewall Democrats thanks President Obama and the Democratic Leadership for their strong support which ultimately led to the passage of this legislation,” said Jon Hoadley, Executive Director of the Stonewall Democrats. “We now have a President who is willing to sign this crucial legislation into law and that is why we continue to build support for its passage in the United States Senate. The Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act would close legal loopholes which treats violence targeting the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community as less important that crimes committed on the basis of other factors. This legislation gives local law enforcement agencies the tools that they need to equally prosecute bias motivated crimes.” On Tuesday, the White House urged lawmakers in the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate to pass the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act. In a statement to lawmakers and the press, President Obama said “This week, the House of Representatives is expected to consider H.R. 1913, the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009. I urge members on both sides of the aisle to act on this important civil rights issue by passing this legislation to protect all of our citizens from violent acts of intolerance – legislation that will enhance civil rights protections, while also protecting our freedom of speech and association. I also urge the Senate to work with my Administration to finalize this bill and to take swift action.” With more than 120 local chapters the Stonewall Democrats is the national organization of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and allied Democrats. Stonewall Democrats works to elect pro-equality Democrats to public office and improve the Democratic Party on issues important to pro-equality Americans.

“Log Cabin Republicans is encouraged by the passage of H.R. 1913 – it provides local and state law enforcement with the funding and tools necessary to fully prosecute crimes of the most heinous nature – those based out of hate,” comments Hamilton. “We are happy to join the National Sheriffs’ Association, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the National District Attorneys Association, the Presbyterian and Episcopal Churches and other law enforcement and civil rights organizations in support of this legislation.”
Log Cabin Republicans spokesman Charles T. Moran further comments: “As Republicans, we are heartened to see that free speech, from whatever perspective, will be strengthened. This legislation specifically protects First Amendment rights, preserves and protects the rights of all Americans to express their own individual opinions, be it in the public square, in their private homes or their pulpits,” states Moran. “This is not hate-speech legislation – it is hate-crime legislation.”
H.R. 1913 provides federal funding and assistance from the Department of Justice for local and state law enforcement agencies, or where local authorities are unwilling or unable to act, by taking the lead in investigations and prosecutions of bias-motivated, violent crimes resulting in death or serious bodily injury. The legislation also makes grants available to state and local communities to combat violent crimes committed by juveniles, train law enforcement officers or assist in state and local investigations and prosecutions of bias-motivated crimes.
A 2007 Hart Research poll shows large majorities of every major subgroup of the American electorate – including such traditionally conservative groups as Republican men and evangelical Christians – expressing support for strengthening hate crimes laws.
These eighteen Republican legislators voted in support of H.R. 1913, and the thousands of Log Cabin Republican members across the nation thank them for their support, and encourage the Senate to act swiftly to pass this legislation as well.

Republican Governor M. Jodi Rell signs gay marriage into Conn. law
A spokesman for Gov. M. Jodi Rell has stated that she will sign the bill (which passed 28-7 in the Senate and 100-44 in the House of Representatives) into law. While Rell, a Republican, signed the state’s 2005 civil unions law, she has also said that she believes marriage should be between a man and a woman.
I’m glad that a politician can leave their personal, emotional, and religious views aside and realize that civil rights and equality take precedence in politics. This is America. We are all supposed to be equal here. We have the Constitution to prove it. Its called the 14th Amendment - Citizenship Rights.

This morning, April 30, the Maine Senate voted 20-15 in favor of LD 1020, a marriage equality bill. It now moves to the House of Representatives. The Senate defeated an amendment to the bill that proposed putting the question of marriage equality for same-sex couples before voters.
According to most polls, the Maine electorate is about evenly divided on the issue. Maine currently provides same-sex couples with access to limited rights and benefits through a domestic partner registry. But, as did Vermont’s Legislature, which pioneered civil unions, this was considered a half-measure, which didn’t provide all of the rights and responsibilities of full marriage equality. Similarly, New Jersey, which has civil unions, is considering full marriage equality, which will probably come up sometimes this year. And neighboring Connecticut, faced with the same situation, became the third state (after Massachusetts and Iowa) to grant full marriage equality. The Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders, a Boston-based group that helped make Massachusetts the first state in the Union to give full marriage equality, has expanded its mission to the six New England states. The region is proving itself to be in forefront of the marriage-equality movement. When and if Maine grants marriage equality, the only two remaining states will be New Hampshire, where marriage equality made a giant step yesterday with passage in its legislature; and Rhode Island, where marriage equality is expected to be taken up by legislature sometime this year. “Just as spring is coming to New England, so is marriage equality and it is just as welcome and just as sweet,” GLAD Executive Director Lee Swislow said in a statement. “We are so proud of Maine and of every New England state where we have played a vital role in bringing marriage equality. With progress in New Hampshire and a win in Vermont, winning in Maine could put us only one state away from our goal of “6x’12″ – equality in all six New England states by 2012.” “It seems like every day another state legislative body is voting in favor of marriage equality,” added Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese in a statement. HRC and the Task Force both had workers on the ground traveling to cities and towns of the Pine Tree State. “Today’s victory in Maine will resonate throughout the country as other states continue to consider extending the freedom to marry,” said National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Executive Director Rea Carey. “We congratulate our state partner, EqualityMaine, for its great work to achieve this hard-fought victory.” So, the next quesion is, will Gov. James Baldacci sign it? Interestingly, the governor apparently made an unsolicited phone call to a well-known blogger. Pam, of Pam’s House Blend, relates a dizzying conversation with the Democratic governor. “I was extremely impressed by the arguments for both sides, but especially by the proponents,” the governor reportedly said. “I was opposed to this for a long time, but people evolve, people change as time goes by.” Pam relates the conversation as “very friendly.”

Congresswoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) got up in front of her colleagues in the House of Representatives, who were debating an expansion of hate crimes legislation, and said that the MURDER of Matthew Shepard was a HOAX!"those who say Matthew Shepard was murdered in Wyoming for being gay are perpetrating a "hoax" on the American people. "I also would like to point out that was a bill -- the hate crimes bill that's called the Matthew Shepard bill is named after a very unfortunate incident that happened where a young man was killed, but we know that that young man was killed in the commitment of a robbery. It wasn't because he was gay. This -- hate crimes bill was named for him, but it's really a hoax that that continues to be used as an excuse for passing these bills." The New York Times reported in 1998: "According to the local police and prosecutors, the two men lured Mr. Shepard out of a bar by saying they were gay. Then, the Laramie police say, the pair kidnapped Mr. Shepard, pistol-whipped him with a .357 Magnum, and left him tied to a ranch fence for 18 hours until a passing bicyclist spotted Mr. Shepard, who was unconscious."Matthew's mother was in the audience when this statement was made.This is just disgusting, and a disgrace. Virginia Foxx is an embarrassment to the United States, and the human race. She is a Roman Catholic, but apparently knows nothing about Christ's teachings. Maybe she needs a refresher course. Maybe she should read Leviticus 19:18, and Matthew 22:35. Maybe she needs it tattooed to her forehead. You know, love thy neighbor as thyself. Spewing this kind of hate is inexcusable!
